We are in Sanctum, the last bastion of peace within this tainted world... No creature of evil can enter as long as I'm here.

The very first area the player will see upon loading into the game, Sanctum serves as the 'last bastion' of uncorrupted life within the world of ATLYSS following a calamity known as the Shattering. The settlement is inhabited by the three Guardians, who act as both the protectors and overseers of the settlement.

Location Overview

The starting area of ATLYSS, Sanctum acts as an NPC hub and a Safe Zone for the player. The player will very frequently return to this place due to its plethora of important available systems, ranging from Bandit Guardian Sally's shop (or her pet mimic Stash Spike!), enchanting gear at Vivian's, or questing for Mystic Guardian Angela. Sanctum also houses many citizens who provide lore and insight into the world of ATLYSS.

Spawn Platform

Located in front of World Portal, the Spawn Platform is where the player spawns when they first load into the game. The platform consists of ruined and shattered stone structures, including archways and walkways. At the end of the Platform opposite of the rest of Sanctum (behind the player upon spawn-in), two warp circles can be found. The center warp takes the player to a bridge leading to the Barracks, while the rightmost warp takes the player to Sanctum Lake.

World Portal

Located prominently in the center of Sanctum within the confines of Angela's tower, the World Portal is where the player will receive quests from Angela, the Mystic Guardian. Here, they may also fast travel via the portal, and interact with the Mirror of Illusion. Whenever the player uses the recall spell, the player will be placed in front of the World Portal.

The World Portal houses many of Angela's notes, and going near its interior walls will activate the Universal Lexicon.

Sally's Shop

Located to the left of the World Portal, Sally's Shop is where the player will buy and sell their goods to Sally, the Bandit Guardian. Sally's shop also houses Spike, Sally's pet mimic who functions as storage.

Checking behind Sally's Shop lies Skrit, one of Sally's colleagues. He allows the player to gamble for various items.

Enchanting Hut

Located past Sally's Shop, the Enchanting Hut is where the player can meet Vivian, an apprentice of Angela who can enchant the player's gear.

Gateway

Located to the right of the World Portal, the Gateway is where the player can exit Sanctum and explore Outer Sanctum Gate, and by extension the rest of the world.

Barracks

Located behind the World Portal, the Barracks is where the player can meet Enok, the Fighter Guardian. A portal to the pvp arena Sanctum Arena can also be found while in multiplayer.

Sanctum Lake

Located behind Sally's shop, Sanctum Lake is a section of Sanctum that is encased by rocky terrain and houses a lake. Sanctum Lake can be entered via the Spawn Platform's rightmost warp. Currently Sanctum Lake serves no practical purpose, but a future update will allow the player to fish at Sanctum Lake. It is currently the only location with swimmable water.

Lore

Sanctum is the 'last bastion' for the people of ATLYSS after the Shattering, and holds the largest amount of NPCs because of that. The only reason why Sanctum can stay purified against the corruption is because of Angela's presence. She states that if she were to leave Sanctum, her protection would be lost.

The Spawn Platform has a stone tablet that activates the Universal Lexicon, which explains the purpose of ATLYSS.

Angela's Tower holds many entries of the Universal Lexicon, which give insight into Mystic Skills, The World of ATLYSS, and the Sky Whale.

The citizens of sanctum seem to serve several rules depending on the color of garb they wear, as it represents the guardian they follow.

  • Citizens dressed in red follow Enok, and fill the role of guards.
    • They are the only type to ever wield a weapon, that being a spear.
    • Those that serve as guards guard the Gateway and the Barracks, maybe showing that Angela's presence alone is not enough to keep Sanctum pure of all Creeps.
    • Some are also shown to be keeping stock of the amount of food they have at Sanctum Lake.
      • Sally is specifically mentioned to provide food, with carrot cake being a favorite.
  • Citizens dressed in blue follow Angela, and are presumed to be scholars following Angela's teachings.
    • Many inhabit Angela's Tower.
      • Those inhabiting the tower are attempting to learn spells, with one stating that they can cast Fluxbolt, although to not much effect.
    • Other blue citizens found outside of Angela's tower appear to be lost in thought.
    • There is a partially special blue citizen sitting outside of Angela's tower who witnessed the Shattering.
      • Their appearance is special, having longer, floppy ears compared to other citizens.
      • They state that they used to live in the Efford Terrace, which is now inhabited by Slimeks and the Slime Diva.
      • They mention the Sky Whale, and if it still watches over them.
  • Citizens dressed in green follow Sally.
    • They are absurdly uncommon, with only two inhabiting Sanctum.

Trivia

  • There are three secret chests that can be found in Sanctum
    • One is found at the top of the World Portal.
    • One is found behind the Barracks.
    • One is found in a hidden crevice outside of Sanctum Lake's walls.
  • Sanctum Lake can be entered without the warp if the player is determined enough.
  • Sanctum Lake is currently the only place where the player can swim.
  • At Sanctum Lake, a citizen states that the player can breath in water due to Angela's Blessing.
  • Scaling Angela's tower grants the Scaling the Tower achievement.
