ATLYSS has gone through several phases of development. There are no playable tech demos for iteration 1 (in Kiseff's own words, the game was rather unstable), but iteration 2 is where the game began exploring its potential as an open-world RPG. Development pivoted away from open world exploration and more towards dungeon crawling with iteration 3, and iteration 4 saw a return to the open world formula.
For a brief summary of development history as a whole, see "Development".
Iteration 1
Iteration 1 of ATLYSS was built in 2018. Surviving footage shows a 2D platformer with RPG elements, such as a character creator, stats, experience gain, classes, an in-game chat, and equippable armor. The sole playable race, the Poons, were called "Gewts" at one point in development.[1]
The Iteration 1 Gallery contains a small variety of screenshots from iteration 1.
Iteration 2
Iteration 2 covers development during 2020. Until December 12, 2020, the game was formally known as PoonQuest, and was developed as an open world action RPG. The only playable race was the Poon (which at this point in development, had four nipples like real rabbits instead of the assets available in the present day), and character customization was limited. Players could choose from 6 fur colors (pink, frosty blue, vanilla, lime green, purple, and black), two or three eye presets, a few tail and hair styles, as well as a personality, which dictated idle animations. All versions of iteration 2 supported both keyboard and gamepad controls, though the gamepad controls did not work with the character select or character creation screens for everything beyond the original August 31 tech demo.
The August 31, 2020 build of PoonQuest was a tech demo for movement and combat (waged against the humble DokuDoku), and explorable locations were largely untextured. The first location was a dark blue rocky plain full of items for the player to pick up. Through a doorway in a wall, players could move on to a green geometric interior full of Dokus. The camera angle was fixed in third person in this build. A cave to the right of the spawn in the starting location contained two dokudokus, a t-posing Joible Puppet, and two friendly NPCs: Angela and a Kubold-like NPC named Piko.
The game was polished up, and another tech demo was finished on December 5, 2020. Dubbed "ControlStressTest", this version of the game boasted textured environments, a dodge roll button, the ability to move the camera freely in third person (or go into first person) and a playable test file for players to start the game right off the bat, as character creation was buggy. The test file contained a green Poon named Judy, who started wearing a horned helmet and wielded a sword. The playable space included a small forest full of DokuDokus (
Fire-type Creeps) and a cliff where Suki Nipps resided. There wasn't much to do, as this was a tech demo.
The December 9 update for the demo (p12v03) added sound effects for swinging the default character's sword. Joible Puppets (
Shadow-type Creeps) were also added to the enemy lineup. Players could now also dodge roll.
Starting with a12 (released December 30, 2020), players spawned into a linear, blue coastal tunnel known as Poon Cove upon character creation. Exiting the cave would bring them to Old Bilsmando, a settlement with a store and a sole NPC named Spencer.[2] Attempting to enter the store would bring the player back to Poon Cove. Ahead lay a crossroad: to the left, players would find Suki Nipps on a cliff overlooking a vast landscape with the Sky Whale high above. Straight ahead, players would pass through a great gate. Heading left after entering this gate would bring players to Angela's library, which they could enter to initiate fast travel by riding the Sky Whale.
Players had two options for fast travel: they could enter the Test Cave and battle Creeps, or they could select WhoreCity... which also took players to the Test Cave. WhoreCity appeared to be an entry testing how much text could fit in a location's description on the fast travel UI. The Test Cave contained a few chests, some Joible Puppets, the usual Dokus (who could be knocked back quite far by player attacks), and White Grubdogs, a
Normal-type Creep too big to be knocked back by player strikes.

Iteration 3
Iteration 3 of ATLYSS was developed in 2021 as a dungeon crawler with RPG elements. Players would pick a starting class, then run through dungeons fighting waves of enemies alone or in a group. Angela returned in the August 10, 2021 build, where she appeared as a large dragon (perhaps Yeppi-like) with floppy ears, black scales, and blue hair. The orange and blue color scheme was already established for her clothing at this time. She served as a shopkeep, offering starting gear for free, and players would pay her with currency acquired by killing Creeps in exchange for potions to restore resources and revive fallen players.
There were 5 weapon types: a dagger, a sword, a scepter, a staff, and a two-handed battleaxe. These could drop from enemies, and occasionally had elemental enchantments that allowed the user to deal damage in that weapon's element (fire, frost, earth, etc). Available classes included the Viking, Maid, Mystic, Warlock, and Thief. Warlock and Thief were added later in iteration 3's lifespan. The Viking wielded lightning spells.[3][4] Mystics were oriented towards elemental spells—namely fire, water, earth, and wind.[5][6] Maids appeared to deal Holy damage, and were geared towards healing.[7][8] Thieves worked best striking swiftly up close or from afar with bows,[9] while Warlocks were slated to be a summoner class.[10] Creeps could also have buffs similar to the elite enemies in iteration 4.
There were two races to choose from in iteration 3: the Puun (Poons by another name) and Yeppi (early Kubolds), though Byrdles and Changs were planned to be implemented. Byrdles were playable in the August 10 build, but not the November 10 build. Puuns were reintroduced as demonic beings:[11] while playing as a Puun, Angela would regard the player with disdain.[12] The Yeppis, on the other hand, were quite the opposite: described as a lawful people who value wisdom and prefer thoughtful solutions to violence,[13] Angela responded favorably to them.[14] Byrdles were undescribed in character creation, but Angela had some interesting insight into the nature of the world for them in her greeting, referring to the player's surroundings as a "Titan's dream".[15]
Upon booting up the game in the August 10, 2021 build, players would spawn in one of two locations: most of the time, they'd spawn in Suki Nipps' palace.[16] Occasionally, they'd start in Angela's library. The November 10 build had players spawn in the Portal Room instead. In all instances, players would need to step onto a portal rune in the back of the zone to be transported to a dungeon. KisSoft intended for Suki to be hovering out of reach at her starting hub.[17] In August of 2021, KisSoft posted a progress shot for the unused Byrdle goddess Dorabelle's shop room.[18]
The November 10 demo had minimaps with map names: the August 10 demo did not. v0.802 players could explore a verdant dungeon called "Florazin".[19] This dungeon was comprised of several rooms with Creep spawns (referred to as "creep dens"), in which players needed to dispose of waves of Joible Puppets in order to progress and whack chests open with their weapons. The boss of Florazin was the Cannon Bug. v0.0.95e players were instead thrown into Woodpeak, a large, open jungle temple riddled with Red, Blue, and Green Minchrooms. The three Minchroom varieties had elemental affinities not unlike their iteration 4 counterparts: the Red Minchrooms wielded fire magic, Blue Minchrooms were affiliated with water, and Green Minchrooms wielded air magic. The music that played in Woodpeak plays in Tuul Valley in the current version of ATLYSS. At one point, Kiseff intended

Iteration 4
Iteration 4 is ATLYSS as players know it: an open world RPG with dungeons to explore and quests to complete. Iteration 4 spans from late 2022's pre-alpha to the present day: Kiseff has committed to finishing ATLYSS with iteration 4.
